Creating a travel inventory list

Marie Kondo-ing my things and creating the ultimate travel inventory spreadsheet

I had a lovely conversation in March with one of our travel writers, Meredith Kane. We were grabbing breakfast in a vibey coffee shop in Cape Town when she asked me, “Do you think the world gets bigger or smaller the more you travel?”

I’ve come to the conclusion a long time ago that your bucket list doesn’t get shorter the more you travel. If anything, it just gets longer.

Because often, you’ll find yourself chatting with another traveler in a dusty market and they’ll share about some island somewhere where they had the most amazing mushroom tea, and all of a sudden, that place is on your bucket list.

But what I find most amusing about travel is that I’ve had more run-ins with friends from back home strolling the streets of Bangkok, or while sitting in an airport in Europe, than I have in the city where we grew up.

Hell, the first week I got to Cape Town I quite literally ran into an old friend from a Remote Year program while on a run on the promenade.

So I personally think that even though your bucket list may get longer, the world feels smaller the more you travel.

I’m curious, what do you think?

Hey, this is Kelsey, founder of SiteSee. I’ll send an email like this every Friday where I’ll share my musings from my travels, the latest research undertaken by our travel writers, as well as recommendations for travel products, interesting podcasts, good reads, and more.

I landed back in the States on Monday and I decided I’m going full Marie Kondo on all my things.

Since becoming location-independent, I’ve amassed a substantial amount of possessions over time, which are now scattered across various parts of the globe. I currently have a (very overpriced) storage unit in San Diego, I left a few things behind in Cape Town for when I return, and my car and several suitcases live at my parent’s house in Arizona.

TL;DR - I’ve got sh*t everywhere.

So I’m cutting the fat and selling off or getting rid of most things.

And since I’ve spent the majority of the last two years researching and testing out travel gear and apparel, I decided to create a sort of inventory sheet of all the things I own and absolutely love, as well as a list of travel essentials I have yet to buy.

My goal is to get it to a place where you can make a copy of it and have your own personal travel inventory list to monitor the gear you possess and the gear you still need to obtain.

It’s a work in progress, but I wanted to give ya’ll the first look at it: Travel Inventory List.

Check it out and let me know what sections I’m missing or if there’s anything I should add.

And since a few of you requested, here are the latest articles published this week:
